Improper brushing, flossing could leave a layer on your teeth called as plaque, this is a layer comprising of bacteria which could enter into your gums causing inflammation( body's response to stimuli which could be a pathogen like bacteria in this case , irritants like food impacted in gums/strong alcoholic mouthwashes , and is only a protective response by the body inducing redness, swelling, rise in temperature ,pain or all the above)
Gum swellings could be due to any of the mentioned reasons or also due to trauma during brushing or any accidental event .
Gums swellings are common among pregnant women and is completely normal but do consult a dentist an maintain proper oral hygiene.
Gum swellings can also be due to improper fitting cap / denture or any infection from your already restored tooth (when your filling has chipped out and given way for micro organisms) and already root canal treated teeth if not maintained properly.
Gum swellings can also be due to other underlying diseases so it is better to consult a dentist if u notice any swelling for more than 2 days.
TREATMENT :
1.Gargle with plenty of salt water to reduce the inflammation.
2.Avoid mouthwashes and any other irritants.
3.Avoid hot and spicy foods for a week.
4.Use topical gels like mucopain. Can use essential oils like peppermint too.
5.Get Scaling (professional cleaning ) done, this might clear out the collected bacteria and debris in your gums which might be the cause for your swelling.
6.Take antibiotics to reduce infection.
7.Drink plenty of water and eat fruits. Stay hydrated.
8.Brush twice a day and floss properly.FOLLOW modified BASS TECHNIQUE FOR BRUSHING.
9.Avoid smoking ,alcohol and other sugar beverages.
10. Place a cold compress over the swelling.
Gum swellings are not always associated with diseases. It could be due to a minor trauma from brush too. Consult a dentist if your swelling lasts more than 2 days with pain.
