 ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

We would have come across the term "Root Canal Treatment" very often, and wondered why is it expensive , why the dentist is very particular in doing it, why to wear a crown /bridge or cap after the treatment and what to do if I can't do this pricy treatment.

Here is your answer.

What is ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?

So basically as the name suggests, this is a treatment for the root of your tooth which is currently causing you pain, broken, worn out or needs repair.

Every tooth has a single or multiple roots underlying in your bony socket covered by your gums.

Why do we care about what's inside the root below ???????

Teeth like every other organ of your body has blood vessels and nerves inside them called the pulp. So this pulp is seen running inside the tooth encased in a cavity called the pulp cavity which covers the top and root portion of every tooth.

The pulp has blood vessels and nerve endings which when infected or severed causes pain, swelling and inflammation.

So basically a damage to the inner pulp is repaired by this treatment.

WHAT'S THE PROCEDURE?

In simple terms, the infected root is cleaned in this process, the tooth is made dead by removal of the pulp (which contains the nerves and blood vessels), the root canal which is now empty is cleaned , shaped and artificial material is filled in the root canal to fill up the space and the tooth cavity is sealed with cement.

The treatment may take single visit to multiple visits based on the condition of the tooth and purpose of the treatment.

Why is wearing a crown/ bridge /cap after ROOT CANAL TREATMENT necessary?

It is always necessary to wear a crown over the root canal treated tooth because the root canal

treated tooth is going to be brittle however and the strength of the tooth is going to be

compromised by 50%  and to fill in this, placing a crown over the treated tooth is going to

make it stronger not like your original natural tooth but somewhat Closer to it.

Why is Root Canal Treatment expensive?

Usually patients complain that this treatment is expensive but actually negligence is. Your treatment might have not been this expensive if you had got your filling done when you had a small cavity.
Ignorance and Negligence have actually caused you this. But by getting this treatment done, your going to be free of your pain.

SUBSTITUTE FOR ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

Actually there is not a substitute for this treatment , but if your cavity hasn't been extended too long your dentist might be able to still save your tooth by procedures like PULP CAPPING,  PULPOTOMY etc.

Worst case scenario if you still don't want to get this treatment you would have to get your TEETH EXTRACTED and replacing a missing tooth is going to be even a bit more expensive.

The above mentioned points are for easier understanding. Please contact your Dentist to know more about your treatment and get them clarified before it's too late.
