Bleeding Gums
Bleeding from gums can be due to numerous reasons, from improper oral hygiene maintainence to underlying disease that shows it through your oral cavity.
It is true that most of the diseases in your body shows signs in your mouth which helps in early diagnosis and treatment. This is also one of the reasons why your dentist sometimes ask you to get a physician's opinion and consent when he spots any abnormality.
Coming to the bleeding gums, improper oral hygiene could be a major reason for bleeding gums. This is because plaque (an layer of micro organisms forming a sheet over the improperly maintained teeth) and calculus ( calcified plaque) when settled in you teeth they get lodged between your gums and teeth and this impinges on your gums and therefore causes bleeding while brushing.
This is the reason why Brushing alone is not enough and flossing is more important as this helps in removing any plaque or food lodged in between two adjacent teeth. The food left in your mouth over night is actually quite hazardous as it has already started to collect as much micro organisms and started it's damaging work.
It is very important to brush twice a day and especially before going to bed because for the rest of the night your going to keep your mouth closed which is an optimal environment for micro organisms to cultivate and grow.
Other reasons for bleeding gums can be due to underlying systemic diseases or even pregnancy.
If pregnant it's normal your gums are swollen , if that's the case meet your dentist and take extra care to maintain good oral hygiene.
In long standing diseases like Diabetes, HIV, bleeding disorders, etc. , you may have bleeding so it's important that you meet your dentist and get a professional cleaning (scaling) done and start maintaing your hygiene there after.
