 MOUTHWASH / MOUTH SPRAYS

Brushing, flossing and mouthwash has always  been considered as the "to do " list of oral hygiene.

We concentrate more on brushing and ask queries about which brush or toothpaste to use but forget about the mouthwashes.

Mouthwash can only be a substitute but never an alternative to your brushing and flossing.

Bad breath or oral halitosis cannot be cured or prevented by mouthwashes but can be controlled to some extent.

So there are many mouthwashes available in markets and  WHICH TO CHOOSE? is the biggest question among us.

CHECK THE INGREDIENTS IN YOUR MOUTHWASHES.

Usually there are alcohol based mouthwashes. Alcohol as we know could be a better disinfectant but in this case most of the mouthwashes containing alcohol are going to give you the BURNING SENSATION IN YOUR MOUTH ONCE YOU TAKE IT. This has nothing to do with its killing your bad breath causing micro organisms, but they are used in very little concentrations tat they act as carrier and has no effect in killing your oral bacteria.

Alcohol based mouthwashes could cause

  • Burning sensation (which can be miscalculated as working for bad breath)
  • Dry mouth
  • Imbalance of bacteria as it does not have targeted action
Alcohol free mouthwashes are as follows

FLUORIDE MOUTHWASHES :

  • Minimises tooth sensitivity
  • Does not cause dryness of mouth
  • Better effect on gloss, colour, hardness and wear of tooth and composite restorations i.e if you have done any fillings are having crowns/caps for any tooth it does not affect them.
  • Has little anti-cavity effect too.

CETYLPYRIDINIUM CHLORIDE :

  • Kills bacteria

CHLORHEXIDINE GLUCONATE :

  • Widely suggested by dentists.
  • Reduces plaque
  • Reduces gingivitis

CARBAMIDE PEROXIDE or HYDROGEN PEROXIDE :

  • Has bleaching effect

NATURAL INGREDIENTS :

  • Essential oils like methanol, eucalyptus and thymol.

MOUTH SPRAYS :

These have come to use recently. Sprays are mouthwashes in another format to give mouth freshness and prevent bad odour.
So always look for a spray that does not contain xylitol and alcohol.

There are plenty of mouthwashes available in the market. They are only an additive to maintain a good oral hygiene and never can be a substitute to brushing and flossing.
Select a mouthwash and discuss with your dentist before using.
