Teeth CLEANING
What is Teeth Cleaning / Scaling?
Teeth Cleaning in Dental offices is usually done by either your dentists or hygienists.
They are done by Hand Instruments or Ultrasonic instrument or by both.
What is the procedure ?
During this procedure your stains, plaque ( a sticky film that covers tooth and contains bacteria) and tartar (hardened / mineralized plaque) are removed using instruments.
Your Dentist would have to remove the tartar by scraping them out.
The sound of the instrument could make you nervous but ,
lesser amount of tartar present = less scraping
For most of the people it is PAINLESS. For some, due to gum disease like gingivitis, periodontitis or if the patient has sensitive teeth this might cause slight pain during the procedure but your dentist might give u anaesthesia if required.
How often you should do cleaning?
Every 6 months or once a year.
Why should you do professional cleaning?
Inspite of brushing and flossing,if there are some unattended plaque, in the long run they may get hardened and get stuck to your teeth which may impinge on your gums and push them away.
This tartar/calculus on pushing your gums away, will expose the underlying root of your teeth and this may cause sensitivity, tooth mobility and other problems.
What is polishing?
After scaling, your dentist might advise you to do polishing, which makes your tooth surface smooth and glossy after your calculus has been scraped out.
Who can do this treatment?
Even kids with milk teeth are supposed to do scaling.
This might be a great chance for them to get their teeth cleaned and to get introduced to dental visits if they hadn't had any which may be helpful for them when they are in need of other treatments and will REDUCE THEIR WHITE COAT FEAR.
Always remember your child's first dental visit should be after their first milk tooth erupts. Milk teeth are as much important as permanent teeth.
